I spent a week or so in Austin, parked in the backyard of a high school friend’s house, making pals with her neighbors who waved at me every morning, looking very confused as I did yoga and made coffee on a camp stove in the yard.
I spent my days hanging out at Barton Springs, on the greenbelt, and hiked and hammocked my last two days in McKinney Falls State Park.
I hadn’t seen anyone hiking the two days I had spent there, which is why I was very confused to see someone driving a gator, plowing through the trees on a tiny hiking path.
“Sorry about that, I hope I didn’t ruin your hike,” said the driver, my later to be incredibly kind Park Ranger pal who showed me around Austin, shared beers and tacos and a ton of belly laughs with.
Moral of the story, be kind and open to meeting people. The world is a great place with beautiful people.
